WinDows 8 Hits !

windows 8

The most striking changes to Microsoft's new operating system are evident as soon as you first switch on a Windows 8 PC. The boot process is surprisingly fast for Windows: gone are the days of staring at an ugly splash screen or waiting for Windows to apply computer settings before you can log in and progress with your day. In fact, the boot process is so fast on new hardware that you barely see the redesigned Windows logo that greets you ahead of an entirely new OS.

There are a variety of ways to purchase Windows 8. Typically, it will be available pre-installed on machines from stores and online outlets, but anyone with an older system running XP, Vista, or Windows 7 can also upgrade for $39.99. Microsoft is using an online installer to let users check compatibility with their systems and upgrade. If you're setting up Windows 8 for the first time you'll be greeted with some familiar, but simplified, options. One of the first choices is how you want to sign in to a Windows 8 PC. A Microsoft account (formerly Windows Live ID) acts as a gateway for synchronizing settings, like your browsing history or appearance preferences, across whatever Windows 8 PCs you use. It's also used to provide access to Microsoft services like SkyDrive, Xbox Music, and the Windows Store. You have the option to create a local account, but Microsoft encourages users to enter their email address or sign up online.

For every new account created on a Windows 8 PC, Microsoft triggers a tutorial video that is designed to teach users how to navigate around the OS. The video runs for around 30 seconds in total, but will loop based on the amount of time it takes to configure an account initially. "Swipe in from any edge," says Microsoft, followed by "move your mouse into any corner." It's the first taste of a new way to use Windows, with a redesigned Start button and Charms. It also prepares you for the shock you're about to experience.
 USER INTERFACE
Microsoft's Windows 8 user interface, originally referred to as Metro-inspired — a nod to the company's internal design language — is as stunning as it is surprising. Taking visual elements from Microsoft's Windows Phone design, the Start screen is the first thing you'll experience when you log in. There's no Start button, no desktop — just rows of colorful, constantly changing tiles. The interface can be customized with backgrounds and colors for those wishing to dig deeper. If you've configured a Microsoft account that uses Outlook.com or Hotmail, then you'll notice that email, calendar, and contacts will automatically appear. If your Microsoft account is linked to Facebook, your Facebook contacts will also appear in the People app and its associated tile. Immediately, this unfamiliar interface already looks like it's customized to you, with your friends' faces ticking away on the People Live Tile and photos you've stored on SkyDrive or Facebook showing up automatically on the associated Live Tile.
Navigating this new user interface is perhaps the most controversial aspect to Windows 8. There's a steep learning curve here, from navigation to basic tasks like turning off your PC. If you're using Windows 8 on a touchscreen device, swiping from the right will reveal the new Charms, a set of five icons that surface the most common tasks in Windows 8. (The odd naming signifies the types of iconography you’d find on a charm bracelet.) The Charms also reveal important information such as the time and date, network status, and battery levels. Unlike previous versions of Windows, the time and date are not displayed on the Start screen or while you use of any Windows 8-style applications — this can be incredibly frustrating if you spend a lot of time in the new Windows 8 UI.

INTRODUCTION OF APPS
The biggest change in Windows 8 facilitates a new breed of apps. Known previously as Metro style apps, the new Windows 8-style apps are not compatible with previous versions of Windows and are available in a new Windows Store that Microsoft is curating. They are designed to be touch-friendly and full-screen, and they represent Microsoft’s riskiest bet in Windows 8. For Windows 8 to truly succeed on tablets, laptops, and desktop PCs, it needs developers to create functional and good-looking apps that work across a variety of display and input types.
If you’re upgrading from an older version of Windows, these new apps are certainly a fresh approach. The Windows Store offers a variety of games and apps, but with only 5,000 apps available the selection is rather limited right now. Microsoft has built a number of apps that are available out of the box, and some are quite good — like Internet Explorer 10, Music, and Xbox. Thanks to the new Windows 8-style apps, Internet Explorer runs full screen and has been redesigned as a touch version. Navigation is simple, with a large address bar and tabs view that both disappear as you navigate a page. You can also flick backwards and forwards between web pages on a touchscreen. Microsoft’s Internet Explorer team should be commended here: the performance is impressive, and the ability to sync favorites and history across all of your Windows 8 PCs is a truly essential feature.
Microsoft is opting to support Adobe Flash, but only in limited cases. Only sites that are on the Compatibility View list will run Flash, but that does include YouTube and other popular video sharing sites like Vimeo. This is particularly useful for tablet use, since rival offerings like the iPad have shunned the use of Flash. Most web developers are moving towards HTML5, which Internet Explorer 10 supports, but for the few big names that require Flash this is a differentiator. Microsoft has also enabled Do Not Track by default in IE10. This controversial change means data collection on web browsing habits is private by default. After years of shipping subpar browsers, Microsoft is heading in the right direction with Internet Explorer 10.

DESKTOP ACTS AN APP
Once you tap on the Desktop tile or launch an older app from the Start screen, you’re essentially using Windows 7 again, and the desktop mode will feel a lot more familiar. Windows 8's biggest change is certainly the Start screen, but the company has also introduced a set of important desktop enhancements that will please existing Windows users. The Start button removal is the biggest visual change, but there are a variety of ways to trigger this traditional functionality with the hot corners of Windows 8, or by using a gesture-enabled mouse or trackpad. Microsoft’s Aero Glass UI has been removed, replaced with a flattened UI that tends to match a variety of desktop themes and backgrounds. Users who are upgrading will, depending on the previous OS, likely launch most applications into desktop mode.
Windows Explorer is also improved and renamed, now referred to as File Explorer in Windows 8. Microsoft has added the ribbon interface to File Explorer, which is collapsed by default. Although it takes up a significant amount of space when enabled, it helps surface a number of common file management scenarios and certainly speeds up some of these tasks. Microsoft has also brought the up arrow back, something the company attempted to kill off in Windows 7. Microsoft has also improved the move and copy dialogs in File Explorer, a single window lets you pause, cancel, and assess file operations.
An updated Task Manager is simplified in every sense of the word. The default view will list all currently running applications. There’s simply an end task button to kill off unresponsive apps — a common use for Task Manager. A secondary view provides even greater information, with performance metrics and app history throughout a number of detailed tabs.

Fifa 13 Review & Rating

I am really adicted to gaming.I loved to play Sports based games and FiFa series From EA Games is one of my favourite.Previous year, EA games came up with FIFA 2012 which I had played. But I was not so satisfied with its Features. This Year, They Had Lauched the latest version of Fifa series; ie; FIFA 2013.The disruptive bet of a new physics and gameplay feature introduced in FIFA 12 has been tweaked and perfected in FIFA 13. On the other point of view, Fifa 13 is much similar to that of Fifa 12. The gameplay and graphics had been improved a lot.

The mechanics of the game hasn’t deviated much from FIFA 12 to FIFA 13.But the Sense of Realism heightened the gaming experience to the gamers. It is one of the major features of FIFA 13.One of the latest addon to Fifa series is the skill games you have to take part in before kicking-off a game. These skill games gives a great gaming experience to the Football loving gamers. In FIFA 13 you play the skill games before kick-off, these are short snippets or challenges – run into a designated area of the penalty box and put the ball in the top right corner of the net, take precise penalties, score a header, etc. – randomized to help you focus before a game instead of just running with the ball on the ground as in Fifa 12. These new addon gives a great experience of realism in the gaming. The commentary team of Geoff Shreeves and Alan McInally had been retained from fifa 12 which also enhances the game.FIFA 13 is the first game in EA’s football franchise to support motion controllers both Move and Kinect are supported. But its not so funny in gaming since you have to use the keys. The gameplay and graphics of Fifa 13 is not much different from that of Fifa 12.First Touch Control is the latest addition to the game, after the previous installments focused on dribbling and defensive aspects of the game. The game is so predictive but overall the gaming experience is satisfying.FIFA 13’s offline ‘Become A Pro’ and ‘Manager’ career game modes are a great way to spend time playing the title until FIFA 14 comes out. So You don't have to sit silently until the next version comes. Many features improving the long haul of a career game mode are evident in fifa 13.
Surprisingly FIFA 13 is a better game than FIFA 12 and introduces features that the previous game lacks, minor updates or not, with features that you can only experience and enjoy in the latest installment of the game. All of which leaves us more or less where we were last year – with the finest football game currently available, unmatched in terms of its mechanics, but which is also crying out for some serious redevelopment. In its current form FIFA has reached a plateau, and either the game – or the way we pay for it – are due for a major overhaul.

Download: Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery 5 (Mac, Windows)

Recover deleted photos, audio, and video files from mass storage devices.

                            Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery 5

With every personal computing device — be it a digital camera, tablet, or a mobile phone — these days features a snapper to let you capture memories at any time. Digital photographs being data stored on any device's storage memory is prone to accidental deletion or data corruption. While there are several data recover tools, the ones that work well are usually quite expensive. If you are looking for something specifically to recover photos, utilities such as Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery can come to your rescue.

As compared to the previous iteration of the software, version 5 sports a better interface, but covers similar features with support for more camera formats and mass storage devices. A major turn-off on when using the product is that it continues to suffer from certain issues as observed in the older version — it could do with a few more options to tweak searches and a better way to track the recovery progress. A few menu options, and a little more clarity with instructions on the UI would have been useful. While the applictaion is free to download, you need to purchase the registration key for recovering your data. On the plus side though, the software seems light on system resources. Although adding audio and video recovery is a nice touch, it seems a bit too high-priced; just toss in a few hundreds more and you can get a better recovery tool such as R-STUDIO, or even the free-to-use PC Inspector tool.

RailRadar:Indian Railways Turns To Google Maps For Live Train Status Updates !

RailRadar system tracks over 1000 trains every day in real-time; provides info about arrivals and departures.

RailRaDaR-TechgOkz

Google has been bettering their Maps product steadily since 2005. After recently unleashing transit lines and live traffic layers for India, the folks at Indian Railways want to help you keep a track on trains using Google's mapping service. A new feature called RailRadar lets you locate the exact position of passenger trains, in real-time, on a Google Map.

The map marks trains running on time in blue, and delayed trains in red. You click on a train name to get its complete route and stops in real-time. To know where a train is right now, you just enter its name or its number — using the search feature docked to the left. Once you've located a train, you can keep a tab on its current schedule, including the next two stations it will arrive at — alongside the time of arrival and the last two stations it departed from. There are over a thousand trains operating every day, and 6500 are being tracked online at any time.

HiTmaN Absolution HiTs !!

HiTmaN aBsoLution

He's bald. He has a tattooed barcode at the back of his head. He carries a briefcase. And he's back. Hitman fans have had to wait a while since the last instalment, Blood Money. In the meantime, we were offered absolute tripe in the form of a cinematic adaptation. The movie proved two things: 1) Getting Timothy Olyphant to go bald doesn't make him a convincing Agent 47; 2) Casting hot Russian Olga Kurylenko is not enough to save a bad movie. Especially when you have a bald Timothy Olyphant playing a severely watered-down version of 47.

The movie was a bitter pill to swallow, but with the fifth iteration of the Hitman series, Agent 47 is back to cleanse your palate. And no, that's not a euphemism for strangling you with his fibre wire, although it very well could be. The game is called Absolution — an apt name, because in a way, it completely absolves all of the movie's sins.

The story might be regarded as your run-of-the-mill Action plot: conspiracy, a quest for the truth, friends turning foes, etc. However, like any Hitman title, it's not the story that makes it a fantastic experience. Thankfully, the gameplay is classic Hitman — meaning you have to kill targets as stealthily as possible. Of course, there are a variety of ways to go about it. You can choose to go in all guns blazing, kill all the henchmen, and finally put a noisy bullet through your target's head. That's not the easy way, though. The more recklessly you approach a mission, the more difficult it gets to fight your way through. Ammo is hard to find, so getting into a firefight more often than not spells a messy death.

Alternatively, you can use other methods to eliminate your target, such as poisoning his food, or sniping him from a distance. This is where Absolution introduces a nifty feature called Instinct, which is an in-game aid with multiple uses. Pressing <R2> takes you into Instinct mode, highlighting the exact location of every guard around the area. It also shows you exactly what route they're going to take on their rounds. This is a vital tool, as it helps you plan your attacks. Instinct also indicates interesting points in the surroundings: windows you can snipe from, food you can poison, books and soda cans you can use to distract guards, and dumpsters to hide in.

Resident Evil 6 Review

 Resident Evil 6

By opting to throw every third-person shooter clich̩ into the mix across its four diverse campaigns Рeach the length of a retail game in its own right and inspired by returning heroes РCapcom has seemingly finally embraced its Frankenstein leanings by itself creating a monster.

Boss fights will go on (and on) until your fingers cramp, enemies will shoot back (yep, that’s right, even the zombiefied ones) and your motley crew of good guys will find themselves in mortal peril so many times that you cease to care before a quarter of the game is through.
No doubt Capcom were thinking they’d covered all their bases (and then some) by including gameplay elements from just about every action game you’d care to mention, but the truth is they might have been better in seeking a return to the survival horror foundations that made the series’ name, rather than pursue the franchise’s latter day move into close-quarters fighting, incessant quick-time events and constant pyrotechnics.
Indeed Resident Evil 6 is almost schizophrenic in the way it blends cutting-edge visuals, which certainly impress, with gameplay which in all honesty hasn’t evolved far beyond what we experienced in the seven-years-old Resident Evil 4. Of course, there’s no doubting RE4’s qualities, but to still be singing from that same hymn sheet now not only smacks of a lack of ambition but feels ultimately lazy.
Take the best parts of Leon’s campaign – which without spoiling anything make for the best parts of the entire venture – that trap our hero as his insipid cohort in ambushes where are never ending tide of zombies must be repelled for a set time period.
Each of these moments, of which there are plenty, are tantamount to the church scene at the beginnings of RE4, and while still full of tension and hold-on-to-your-pants survival there’s just something off about playing through a scenario which you’ve not only seen before, but seen better implemented in a game published in 2005.
It’s the same throughout the other campaigns with Chris Redfield’s adventure copying the third-person cover mechanics of Gears of War, Jake Muller’s (that’s Wesker’s son don’t you know) playing similarly but with a spot of wrestling moves thrown in for good measure, and Ada Wong’s… well, actually, at least Ada’s campaign features a slight return to more the more eerie gameplay of Resident Evil’s past, not least because her episode isn’t cooperative.
I’ll state now that cooperative play isn’t a facet I need to see in a Resident Evil game and an aspect that only detracts from the experience in my eyes. For one, if there’s a partner who can revive you once you’re down then taking damage no longer holds the same cache it did.
Secondly, dialogue between character is so badly scripted that whether that’s purposely done or not there’s just no way for any atmosphere to build up before its torn down. Finally, when taken online, there’s scant chance your experience is going to go well with players our for themselves and a lack of the nudges of a truly co-op game like Left 4 Deadimplemented to work against such negative play.
No doubt Capcom would point out that Resident Evil has now moved beyond the survival horror and into the action genre, so why criticise based on the series’ original blueprint? It’s a worthy point, but the issue is that Capcom still call their game Resident Evil, and so invite such comparisons.
If they’d rebranded the franchise then fine, do what you want, but by keeping the name in order to pull in fans of the series’ early entries you unavoidably invite comparison. Clearly the action genre is also one of gaming’s most crowded so, again, why bother to tackle it all when you had the survival horror genre all tied up?
At its best RE6 still works, if as an action titles rather than a horror one, and indeed being set upon by tens of zombies at a time in an urban environment in some way takes you back to Resident Evil 2 and makes you think how good that would have been given today’s technology.
Because it’s an action game upon which many hours and much money has been spent it will keep you entertained – indeed the shiny graphics alone will ensure it passes muster for a great many – but with 40+ hours of gameplay split across its four campaigns there’s just too much dross to ever let the title blossom to any more than OK.
An average Resident Evil then, and one which surely leaves the franchise in need of a return to its old ways, or else an entirely new direction.
Score: 3/5

Google Chrome For smart phones unveiLed

Google has released a new version of its Chrome web browser for iOS devices, using the same core engine as Apple's own Safari app, but with the ability to synchronise with Chrome's desktop version as its key feature.
The new app was unveiled during the second-day keynote at Google's I/O conference in San Francisco, where Google also revealed that Chrome already has 310m active users on other platforms: mainly computers, although a beta version for Android was released in February 2012.
The iOS version is different to that, because Apple's iOS rules dictate it has to use the WebKit engine used for Apple's Safari browser.
A key point, since it means on iOS, Chrome isn't faster to use than its rivals – one of the big drivers of its growth on computers. And yes, that means it's also no use for websites using Flash.
Instead, the focus is on bringing Chrome's familiar user interface to iOS, with a single box for URLs and searches, and the ability to open an unlimited number of tabs then swipe between them quickly. On iPhone, you flip through thumbnails of individual tabs.
Chrome for iOS' main attraction, though, is its synchronisation with the computer version. Open tabs, bookmarks, passwords and "omnibox data" – the history of what you've typed into that single box – all synchronise across devices, if you're logged in to your Google account.
Having spent time using it this morning, it's a really useful feature. Less for the open-tabs aspect, and more for the omnibox data where the sites you visit regularly pop up as suggestions when you start typing a URL.
There's a slightly-tweaked on-screen keyboard that has buttons for colon, full stop, hypen, forward slash and .com above rather than on the bottom row.
Given the in-app browsers in apps like Facebook and Twitter, Chrome could be the app that leads many people to stop using iOS' Safari browser altogether (standalone, as opposed to working under the hood of those other apps).
It certainly has a good shot at becoming the most popular third-party browser on iOS, although there are a number of existing competitors including Opera Mini, Skyfire, Dolphin and Mercury.
Mozilla does not yet have a full version of its Firefox browser available for iOS – its Firefox Home app enables people to access their desktop history, bookmarks and open tabs through Apple's native Safari browser – but earlier in June the company showed off a work-in-progress iPad browser codenamed Junior.
Meanwhile, Google continues to work on the Android version of Chrome separately, which has no restrictions on its core engine. That version came out of beta this week, and will be the preloaded browser on Google's Nexus 7 tablet.
As Chrome continues its expansion onto mobile, Google will continue to face questions about what data it's collecting on Chrome users, and what it's doing with that data.
Critics of the company's approach are unlikely to raise a cheer at the thought of signing in to Chrome across all their devices – although note, it's optional here and can be disconnected if you change your mind.
Chrome is likely to get new features faster on Android, but if you're comfortable with the privacy implications and already use it on your computer, the release of the iOS version is welcome – and a genuinely useful alternative to Safari in the same way that Sparrow is a good alternative to iOS' native Mail app.

10 SEO Techniques All Top Web Sites Should Use

We recently discussed the 15 Key Elements All Top Web Sites Should Have. This post focused on elements relating to design, content and development. This time, we’ll move onto the important issue of Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

SEO is such a hot topic these days. How do you get your web site within the first page or two of the search engines? How do you increase your Google page rank?

There are companies who dedicate themselves full time to doing SEO at a pretty penny. Something a lot of people can’t necessarily afford to pay for or spend the time on.

However, there are some simple things you can do when building your site that will help increase your chances of having good results. In no particular order, below are 10 of these items…

1. Title Tag

Near the very top of a web site’s source code you’ll find various meta tags — the standard ones being the Title, Description and Keyword tags. The title tag is technically not a meta tag, though it is commonly associated with them. The title tag plays such a large role in the indexing of your web site, that it is considered the most important of the three.

A page title is the first thing a search engine will look at when determining just what the particular page is about. It is also the first thing potential visitors will see when looking at your search engine listing.

It’s important to include a keyword or two in the title tag — but don’t go overboard – you don’t want to do what’s known as “keyword stuffing” which does nothing but make your web site look like spam. Most people will include either the company name, or title of the particular page here, as well.
2. Meta Tags

There are two primary meta tags in terms of SEO — the description and the keyword tag. It’s debatable whether the search engines use the description tag as far as ranking your results. However it is one of the more important tags because it is listed in your search result — it is what users read when your link comes up and what makes them decide whether or not to click on your link.

Be sure to include a few relevant keywords in this tag, but don’t stuff it with keywords either. The description tag should read like a sentence — not a keyword list.

Due to “keyword stuffing” many search engines now completely disregard the keyword tag. It is no longer nearly as important as it was years ago, however it doesn’t hurt to include them in your source code.

When creating your keyword list, you’ll want to think of the specific terms people will type in when searching for a site like yours. Just don’t go overboard — too many duplicates are not a good thing (as in “web designer” “web designers” “custom web designer” “html web designer” “your state here web designer” – you get the idea). Those are all basically the same, so pick one or two variations at the most and move onto the next keyword.
3. Proper Use of Heading Tags

This is a very important element to consider when writing out your site copy. Use of heading tags helps users, web browsers and search engines alike know where the major key points of your copy are.

Your main page title should use the <h1> tag — this shows what your page is about. Use of additional tags, such as <h2> and <h3> are equally important by helping to break down your copy. For one, you’ll see a visual break in the text. But as far as the search engines are concerned, it will automatically know what your topics are on a page. The various heading tags give a priority to the content and help index your site properly.
4. Alt Attributes on Images

Putting alt attributes on your images actually serves two purposes. In terms of SEO, putting a brief yet descriptive alt attribute along with your image, places additional relevant text to your source code that the search engines can see when indexing your site. The more relevant text on your page the better chance you have of achieving higher search engine rankings.

In addition, including image alt attributes help the visually impaired who access web sites using a screen reader. They can’t see the image, but with a descriptive alt attribute, they will be able to know what your image is.
5. Title Attributes on Links

Including title attributes on links is another important step that any good web site will have. That’s the little “tool tip” that pops up when you place your mouse over a link. These are especially important for image links, but equally useful for text links.

As a note, you should use descriptive text for your links. “Click here” doesn’t really tell a person – or more importantly, the search engines — what the link is. At the very least put a title tag that will explain that “Click Here” really means “Web Design Portfolio” for example. Better yet – make the main link text something like “View my web design portfolio” — this will give some value to the link showing that the resulting page is relevant to searches for portfolio’s.
6. XML Sitemap

My last post referenced the sitemaps used by web visitors to help them navigate through your site themselves. However, there’s another version — XML sitemaps — that are used by the search engines in order to index through your site, as well.

This list of ALL pages / posts / etc. of your site also includes information such as the date the page was last modified, as well as a priority number of what you feel the most important pages of your sites are. All elements that help the search engines properly find and link to all content of your site.
7. Relevant Content

Having content relevant to your main page or site topic is perhaps the most important SEO aspect of a page. You can put all the keywords you want in the meta tags and alt image tags, etc — but if the actual readable text on the page is not relevant to the target keywords, it ends up basically being a futile attempt.

While it is important to include as many keywords in your page copy as possible, it is equally as important for it to read well and make sense. I’m sure we’ve all seen keyword stuffed pages written by SEO companies that honestly don’t make much sense from the reader’s point of view.

When creating your site copy, just write naturally, explaining whatever information you’re discussing. The key is to make it relevant, and to have it make sense to the reader. Even if you trick the search engines into thinking your page is great — when a potential customer arrives at the site and can’t make heads or tails of your information and it just feels spammy to them — you can bet they’ll be clicking on the next web site within a matter of seconds.

8. Link Building

We’ve probably all heard of Google Page Rank — it seems to be every web site owner’s dream to have as high a page rank as possible. While the algorithm for determining page rank encompasses many elements, and is constantly changing, one item is the number of links pointing to your web site.

Now, you’ll want to steer clear of link farms and other spammy attempts at getting links to your site. However there are many reputable and niche directory sites that you can use to submit your web site, or specific blog articles to.

With genuine content — especially if you have a blog — you’ll be able to generate links with other web sites and blogs, as well. It’s somewhat of a give and take, in that if you link out to other sites, you’ll find sites linking back to you  — and hopefully see your page rank going up, as well!
9. Social Media

Although technically not SEO, Social Media is such a growing factor in getting your web site noticed, that it’s an important element to include in your plan.

Social media ranges from social networks like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn — to social bookmarking sites such as Delicious, Digg, StumbleUpon and many more. There is a lot of relationship building involved, but as you build your own networks and build quality content on your web site or blog, you’ll see traffic to your web site increasing, as well.

As with any relationship, it is a give and take. Don’t just expect to join a site like Twitter for the pure sake of pushing your content. That just won’t fly — your true intentions will stick out like a sore thumb and do nothing but turn people off.

Even if you are on the site purely for networking reasons, the key is to make friends. Help out members of your network if they ask for a “retweet” or Digg, give helpful advice if asked, etc. You’ll see the same in return.

If you write a great post and have built meaningful relationships with peers in your  niche, you’ll often find that friends will submit your posts and give you votes on the social bookmarking sites. The more votes you receive, the more likely your post is to be noticed by others and shared around, often resulting in additional link backs from other blogs, etc.
10. A Few SEO Don’ts — Flash and Splash

Along with any list of Do’s come the Don’ts. As far as SEO is concerned, two of these items are splash pages (often consisting of a flash animation) and all flash web sites.

Yes, flash is pretty! Full flash web sites can actually be amazing to look at — their own bit of interactive artwork. But unfortunately the search engines don’t get along well with Flash. Although there is talk of possible advancement in this area, for the most part the search engines cannot read Flash.

All that great content that you wrote for your site will not be seen by the search engines if it’s embedded into a Flash web site. As far as the search engines are concerned, your all flash web site might as well be invisible. And if the search engines can’t see your site content, a good chunk of potential customers will miss out on what you have to offer, too.

Equally as “pointless” are splash pages. Once very popular, the splash page should no longer be an important feature of any site. While splash pages used to serve as an introduction into a web site (often with a flash animation), it is no longer seen as helpful, and often times might actually annoy visitors.

For one — it’s an extra click to get into your content. Worse is when you don’t give a “skip intro” option or set of links into your main site content — because you’re essentially forcing your visitors to sit through the full animation. If you’re lucky, this will only annoy them… if not — they’ll just leave without giving your main web site a shot. And without an html link pointing into your site, the search engines have no way to continue either (unless you made use of a sitemap.xml file — but still…)

A good alternative to both issues is to make use of a flash header. There’s no problem to include a flash animation at the top of your main site, or as a feature within the content area, etc. Because this is an addition to your web site, as opposed to a full separate element.

Samsung Galaxy S3 review

There’s a lot riding on the Samsung Galaxy S3 – it’s the successor to the 20million selling S2, it’s the Android phone best-placed to take on Apple’s iPhone, and it’s the device that Samsung hopes will cement its reputation as an innovator.

The first impression I came away with was not that the screen was the best on the market, although it has a depth, responsiveness and sharpness that bests, to my mind the HTC One X, although I wasn’t able to compare the two directly. Nor that the huge 4.8” screen was too big, although it’s heading that way. The compelling thing about the S3 is the package it offers. Like the iPhone 4S after the 4, it offers iterative improvements over its predecessor, but the total effect is to create a radically innovative new device.

In among those things is a new sensor that tracks your eyes – so long as you’re looking at the S3’s screen, it won’t dim or lock itself. Yes, you could just set the screen timer to longer, but “Smart Stay” means you don’t have to. In use, the feature seemed to work very well, with a little icon indicating the phone is watching your eyes.

On a similar note, if you’re looking at a contact, or a message from a contact, the S3 automatically dials that person when you put the phone to your face. It’s one less button to press.

An improvement to voice control, called S-Voice, that lets users control their phone using normal, natural language. So it’s like Siri, only it does more – you can say volume up, for instance, and the phone will filter out the noise of the song it’s playing so it can hear you. The S, we assume, stands for Samsung.

Elsewhere, the phone adds useful features that, for instance, can automatically share a photograph you take with people whose faces are recognised, called 'Buddy Photo Share', or display social media profiles directly on a photograph when those face are recognised. These are features that are useful rather than revolutionary, but they feel like they will be obvious standards in the near future. Tagging groups and offering an automatic slideshow zooming into the faces in a picture are also useful additions. Samsung, unless the patent wars cause further upset, is setting new standards.

When it comes to features such as S-Beam, which transfers files quickly between devices by touching them together, or sharing the phone’s screen content with other devices, these are increasingly becoming more widespread industry standards, as indicated on the new Motorola Razr, which offers similar concepts. The Samsung processor is fast enough to allow crystal clear video to play in a window on your homescreens, which again is nifty, but not vital.

Are there areas where the phone disappoints? The camera is just 8MP – good, but not market leading – although it has been upgraded to offer a 20-shot burst mode and the automatic selection of a best picture. The firm insists on pre-loading apps which I don’t see much use for – while Dropbox (including a remarkable 50GB of storage for two years) and Flipboard are useful, the Music, Game and Video Hubs will have to offer remarkable content to outplay the entirety of the app store, Google Play.

I didn’t get long enough with the phone to talk about the battery life – a 2,100mAh battery is big, but this is a demanding phone that users will have on more than ever before, not only thanks to the screen that stays on because you’re looking at it. Samsung assures me that the performance will be better than the SII; it needs to be much better. It’s good to see, however, that one of the range of optional accessories will be wireless charging, via a special back and charging pad ideal for the bedside table.

Overall, the device is in many ways much like its predecessor: does it feel as solid or heavy in the hand as the iPhone? No, although it’s certainly a lot bigger. Is it a different, superb product in its own right? Absolutely. On spending just a short time with the S3, I’m confident in saying that it’s a worthy successor to the globally popular S2. But I also want to see how much all those new features make a real difference in everyday use to form a fuller opinion.

Four augmented reality games for your smartphone

Bored of playing the usual games on your Android smartphone?

This week, we’ll bring you a few ‘different’ games that might tread a distinct path in terms of playability and fun. Augmented Reality has been in existence since a couple of years now, but it hasn’t really hit the mainstream path, at least as far as games are concerned. A couple of AR apps have been extremely popular, but in the games genre, the content is pretty limited.  Mind you, these games are best played in a controlled environment. Here’s our list:

1.Droid Shooting

One of the most addictive AR games for Android, Droid Shooting makes your boring background come to life with droids attacking you from every nook and corner. It utilises your camera, and makes it a viewfinder for your battlefield. Also, there’s a radar, so you know where those evil Droids are coming from. With a variety of guns to choose from, this one is pretty good fun, and if you incorporate pass-and-play, then you’ll make it even more fun! There’s a time limit as well before another wave of droids come to attack you, so you need to be quick on your reflexes to get them out of the way.

The best part is that the game works even on low-end devices with little to no lag. However, we would have loved it if the droids had integrated a little more with the environment. Imagine, one hiding behind a chair, and you sneak up on it and blast its head off. Some brilliant droid shooting droid action. Nevertheless, a well-made game, which goes easy on system resources as well.

2.Parallel Kingdom

This one is one of the most popular games for Android and it has already been nominated for a couple of awards, including best MMO, best Augmented Reality Game, most creative use of iPhone hardware and best use of location services. Yes, it’s cross platform as well with over one million players in over 100 countries.
A few of the features include:
Entirely free-to-play, can purchase in-game currency or trade with other players
Fully customizable avatars
Weekly community events and updates
Over 20 leaderboards with weekly rewards
Trade Hubs allow open player-to-player trading
Buy, sell, or trade everything from raw materials to swag
Themed chat rooms
The game’s idea is to slay epic monsters in dark dungeons or battle the dragons lurking right in your own backyard. You can travel to far-off lands and conquer anything that stands in your way, while claiming territory, as you go. The plan of action is based on what you want to do with your territory. Usher in a new age of peace and prosperity, or forge a war machine capable of raiding the world’s greatest cities.

3.Skeeter Beater

This one is included primarily because it’s remniscent of a very nostalgic game we used to play on our phones, when Symbian was a big deal. Unlike Parallel Kingdom, this is a more simplistic and casual game. The strategy involves you to carefully beat the Skeeters, till you reach the required number for the round. Then you take a more aggressive approach as misses no longer result in point loss. Focusing on slower Skeeters first sometimes resuls in a combo shot on a passing by fast Skeeter.
Each round becomes increasingly difficult with faster Skeeters, shorter time limits, and higher required scores. Bonus Mode is entered when enough points to pass a round has been obtained. Bonus Mode lasts for the remainder of the round, allowing for additional points without risking point deductions. Each round ends when the time is up or when all Skeeters for the round have been beaten. The game can be played in two modes - 2D and 3D. The 3D Mode allows you to utilize phone sensors to track Skeeters in a full 360 degree range of motion. The 2D Mode restricts Skeeters' movements in proximity to the screen. Phone movement has no effect on the game. We suggest you definitely give 3D a try.

4.Paintball

Last, but not the least, Paintball lets you get into the action with your friends. It lets you experience the heart-pumping action of a game of paintball on your Android phone in some awesome Augmented Reality. Choose from a variety of paintball guns, from your standard marker to industrial-grade paintball grenade launchers to cause maximum damage to your friends. Beware of damage from your friends - your screen flashes when you're hit. The only minor niggle we had with this game was that the screen would flash for a second, like a flash grenade, when we’d actually just shot somebody, and that has a minor hit on concentration.

Of course you can play by yourself, as well, but multiplayer action is just awesome. Basically, you choose the colour of your enemy (preferably based on their shirt colour) and choose teams. So A shoots red and B shoots blue and the numbers get added up to see who won and who lost, at the end of the level. A free-for-all Wi-Fi bloodbath. The score matters, so watch your back!
So, that wraps up our list of Augmented Reality games. Is there any particular one you liked the most? Let us know in the comments section below!

Soulcalibur V:Review & gameplay

Soulcalibur V  is a fighting game released by Namco for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2012. The sixth main installment in Namco's Soul series of fighting games, the game is the follow-up to Soulcalibur IV and retains the weapon-based combat that characterizes the series. The game's story follows a new character, Patroklos, who aims to rid his sister of a curse brought upon her by an ancient weapon.

GAMEPLAY

Like the previous games in the series, Soulcalibur V is a weapon-based fighting game. Players use high and low vertical and horizontal attacks to damage opposing player characters and can block incoming attacks or parry enemies' moves to gain a tactical advantage. The game features a tweaked "Critical Edge" system, allowing players to fill up a meter and utilize a variety of special attacks.

The game features a variety of gameplay modes. In Story Mode, players take control of the game's protagonist Patroklos, guiding him through a series of battles divided into twenty episodes. The game's arcade mode allows players to control any of the game's characters and face six opponents in time trial matches. In addition, the game features Quick Battle mode, which allows players to unlock titles for their online profiles and an extra "Legendary Souls" mode. Like its predecessors, Soulcalibur V also sports variety of multiplayer modes, allowing players to face each other both online and offline. The character creation mode from previous games has also been retained.

The game takes place 17 years after the events of Soulcalibur IV and centers around the children of Soul series veteran Sophitia. The protagonist is her son Patroklos and his estranged sister Pyrrha is a supporting character. The two siblings journey across Europe in an attempt to rid Pyrrha of the "malfestation", a curse that is bestowed upon whoever comes into contact with the evil weapon the Soul Edge.

The game features 30 playable characters, including 10 characters that are new to the series. The new characters include two versions of Pyrrha and Patroklos. The game also introduces the mysterious Z.W.E.I. as well as Viola, a fortune teller. Several new characters use the fighting styles of previous characters in the series: Taki's successor Natsu, Xianghua's daughter Yan Leixia and Xiba, who uses Kilik's fighting style. The game's guest character is Ezio Auditore da Firenze from the Assassin's Creed series. The game also features a number of returning characters, such as Mitsurugi, Cervantes and Nightmare

GOOD :Colourful graphics; Numerous characters; Online Play; Variety of attacks.
BAD :Poor storyline and narration; Guarding restrictions; Over the top voice acting.
Gameplay And Design: 3.5/5
Graphics: 4/5
Sound: 3/5
Mojo: 3/5

Overall Rating: 3/5
